Welcome
Welcome to Alexander Bain’s AlexMUN 2023, AlexMUN’s 13th edition! This is a space in which participant students become part of a simulation of the United Nations. They are able to represent a nation on world-renowned discussion forums in order to debate and reach solutions to international issues. AlexMUN will give students the opportunity to improve communication, critical thinking and leadership skills while making them aware of the current problems of our world.
This year we will be focusing on issues that minorities face, making our topic: “Shedding Light: Visibility of Marginalized Groups”. Having representation in media, discussions, politics, and other opportunities there might be for expression is important to help marginalized communities have a real and functioning voice in diverse forums. Furthermore, visibility helps people understand the challenges minorities face, sympathize with them, and help them raise their voices to cause a change. We want participants in this model to realize how big these issues are and be aware of the role they play in their community.

Instituto Nacional de los Pueblos Indígenas (Español)

El Instituto Nacional de los Pueblos indígenas funciona como el poder ejecutivo cuando se trata de asuntos relacionados con los afromexicanos e Indígenas de México. El Instituto está encargado de definir, diseñar y ejecutar normas, proyectos y estrategias que garanticen la protección y ejercicio de los derechos de los pueblos. Se enfocan en su desarrollo integral y sostenible para proteger y fortalecer sus culturas e identidades.

ONU Mujeres es una entidad de las Naciones Unidas que tiene como objetivo principal promover la igualdad de género y proteger a mujeres y niñas para mejorar sus condiciones de vida. Esto incluye poner fin a la violencia contra las mujeres, incluir a las mujeres en aspectos de paz y seguridad, implementar su empoderamiento económico, entre muchas otras acciones.

The League of Nations was an organization created by the Allied powers after World War I. It lasted from 1920 to 1946 when it was formally disbanded, and its functions were transferred to the United Nations. The League’s main objective revolved around the idea that aggressive war was a crime against humanity. This organization was focused on disarmament, war prevention, settling international conflicts through negotiation and diplomacy, and improving global welfare.

The General Assembly is the main policy-making organ of the United Nations. The members of this organ meet in regular sessions each year to discuss specific issues through the agenda to reach resolutions to the issues. The UNGA provides a forum for multilateral discussions on international issues and it plays a central role in the development and setting of international law.

The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental organization responsible for the protection and implementation of human rights all over the world. Members discuss all issues regarding human rights, including the violations of said rights, and make recommendations on various situations.

The Office on Drugs and Crime is responsible for addressing issues regarding illicit drug use and transnational crime, terrorism, and corruption. This organ is committed to achieving justice and security by strengthening legislative and judicial capacity, reducing drug trafficking, counter trafficking in people, reducing domestic violence, preventing drug use and spread of related infections, and promoting victim empowerment.

The organization aims to expand universal health coverage and respond to health emergencies by using science-based policies and programs. Furthermore, it sets norms and standards, articulates evidence-based policy options, provides technical support, and assesses health trends in member states.

Historical Security Council (English)

The Historical Security Council is a permanent council with the purpose of maintaining international peace and security. This council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to peace and calls on the parties to a diplomatic dispute while recommending methods of adjustment and settlement. It is the only UN organ that, if needed, is able to force a nation to do something after passing a resolution.

The UN International Children’s Emergency Fund is an organ that defends children’s rights, to improve their lives and the ones of their families. It recognizes girls’ and boys’ equally fulfilling education, medical assistance, and empowering participation in political, social, and economic scopes. UNICEF helps find alternatives to overcome poverty, violence, sickness, and discrimination towards children, as well as protecting children from emergency situations.

The European Union is a political and economic alliance that aims to promote peace, its values, and the welfare of its citizens within its borders. It also encompasses issues such as offering freedom, promoting security and justice within borders, and taking measures to regulate asylum and immigration, and preventing and combating crime on the outside.

Star Wars is a fictional saga that has always been highly influenced by politics and give great social commentary as they are a unique mirror of our reality. George Lucas created a rich universe with complex social organization that is worth discussing to interpret reality through art and apply the lessons to the real world. Due to this, we decided to include the Galactic Senate in our MUN. This organ is a legislature assembly of the Galactic Republic. It is in charge of designing laws, making treaties, regulating commerce and mediating disputes.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a marvelous franchise, full of imagination, where desires and possibilities are a reality. It has a delicate and appropriate way of dealing with the most important issues of the world we live in today, politics, environment, values, family, among others. That is why have decided to include the Ministry of Magic in our MUN. This important component is the government system of the wizarding world. It is responsible for enforcing laws for the magical community with the purpose of to preserving order and peace.

The Court has two main functions: to settle legal disputes submitted by sovereign states in accordance with international law and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized UN organs. It is the successor of the Permanent Court of international Justice and the League of Nations.
